Cinemarché, The Merchant, Eastborough, Thursday 2nd June 8pm:
bring and show your film on your mobile phone or laptop, bring headphones, show and watch each other's films, choose your favourite!
Cinemarché International is the idea of three Scarborough creatives, John Oxley, Kane Cunningham and Paul Elsam.
The idea is to host an open, speed-dating style series of events where film-makers can share short films on their mobile phones or laptops. The first event takes place on Thursday 2nd June at 8pm in the Merchant pub on Eastborough, Scarborough.
John Oxley explains:
"There are lots of people in Scarborough and the region making short films and videos. Films about bands, dramas by local actors and directors, animators, and documentary film-makers. These can be seen on YouTube, MySpace or Facebook but where can film-makers show their films to other film-makers or an audience? Our idea is to bring these people together, get their mobiles and laptops out and show and share their films and get the buzz of an immediate response from an audience. We also see it as an opportunity for film-makers, actors, directors and bands to meet, share ideas and to create exciting new work in the town and region. I think this may be the first speed-dating style film event in the world!"
Kane Cunningham, says:
"Scarborough has many interesting film makers and artists who use video for creative practice, however we also have lots of media, music and film students who attend the local college and university. So we want to attract new and innovative talent to the Merchant, who maybe tomorrows Tarantino or Tim Burton."
Eddie O'Murchu, landlord of the Merchant says:
"The Merchant attracts musicians artists actors - they all love the experience the Merchant offers. I have always supported the arts so it makes sense for this event to take place here."
June 2 marks the start of everything. Described by fellow organiser Paul Elsam as "speed dating for film-makers", the event will take place at the Merchant pub on Eastborough between 8pm and 9.30pm. Film makers are invited to simply turn up with their short film – which could be on a mobile phone or a laptop – and share it with others. Everyone who turns up will be able to show their film and view the films made by other people.
Film-makers and film-goers who are interested in this event should come along to the Merchant pub at Eastborough, Scarborough on Thursday 2nd June. Be there by 8pm.
Cinemarché International aims to bring film-makers together, to provide a platform where potentially great films can be shown on mobile devices and to showcase these in a new film festival here in Scarborough in October 2011.
